Forecasting emergency department patients volumes with ML
Aim of the study is the evaluation of several machine learning algorithms to predict the number of patients accessing the emergency department. Identifying periodic variations in demand for ED can lead to optimization of resource allocation and increase of patients' wellbeing in healthcare. 5 years of daily patient arrivals data coming from two different hospitals, OPBG Sant'Onofrio and OPBG Palidoro, were analyzed, thus allowing to test the same algorithms (time series regression, neural network, exponential smoothing) on two rather different kinds of dataset. Seasonal as well weekly trends resulted.
